What's New

The Auriole acoustic guitar represents a long process of design, experimenting, and decision-making.

The objective was to build a guitar whose sound was different and unique, in a way that was immediately useful to a broad range of players. Instead of a variation on existing guitar designs, the Auriole is intended to be a valid alternative for the player whose needs are not met by the classics.

Lessons learned from building, repairing, and/or researching flattop guitars, as well as archtop instruments (from guitars to upright basses), have led me to a design which is a synthesis of both schools.

Low notes speak with authority and power, and the low E string is as clear and defined as the rest. Unlike traditional D-style instruments, the bass is never "boomy" or overpowering - it remains well-defined and well-integrated with the guitar's voice.

Combining the fast, crisp, and articulate response of a fine archtop with the power and bass of the best flattops, the Auriole offers a hybrid voice that works beautifully for nearly any style of music.

Auriole 16.5", "Black Kat"
This Auriole 16.5" features one of my favorite "alternative" hardwoods, Mexican Katalox (pronounced: Kat-a-low-sh). With a similar density to African Ebony, this wood offers a bright, clear, and well-defined tonality as a fingerboard and bridge wood, along with very striking visual appeal.

The Sitka Spruce top is finished in a very thin gloss black lacquer, to set off the character of the Katalox, and add a touch of overall elegance. The back and side s are curly Eastern Hard Maple. Bindings and trim are black Ebony. The "see-thru" grain-matched endpin is a special feature for this guitar.

Tonally, this guitar exhibits crisp and quick response with a very clear and brisk attack, much like an archtop guitar - but with an additional dimension of low-frequency depth and 'breath' reminiscent of a larger D- or J-sized flattop. Single note runs jump out with sparkle and precision, and chords retain outstanding note separation and detail.

At 4" maximum depth, this instrument is comfy and easy to hold despite its slightly larger-than-usual width.

This instrument also features the vertically adjustable 'sliding' neck joint system that permits near-instant action changes with little or no retuning, using only a 1/8" hex key.
