Sneak peek - Two new basses in stock!
April 6, 2014

It's been a busy Winter, and I'm really glad to see Springtime approaching!

I've got a couple of new basses that are now available - studio portraits are not done yet, but here's a first look!

These are both 5-string Elfin instruments with some special upgrades:

1: Elfin 5-string, Burl/birdseye

This bass has a stunning redwood burl top, complemented by an intensely figured birdseye maple fingerboard.

The body back is walnut, and the neck is 3-piece laminated QS maple.  To complete the look, the body and neck have black pinstripe accent veneers, along with black-ringed "deco dots" for a touch of class.

Loaded with Duncan dual-coils and a Pope FlexCore preamp, this bass has a real "NYC" kind of sound - tight, clean, and defined lows with thick, fat upper register and a great, almost 'horn-like' solo fingerstyle tone.  Twist a few knobs for a big, open slap tone with tons of headroom.

#2: Elfin 5-string, Quilt maple/Ocean Blue

Both visually and sonically, this Elfin 5 really reaches out and grabs you.  The AAA quilted maple top is finished in a multi-stage Ocean Blue, which brings out the depth and beauty of the quilted figure.  The poplar body core came from an exceptionally light and resonant board, and gives the bass a lively and quick attack with lots of definition.

The 3-pc. maple neck has internal carbon fiber reinforcements and an upgraded titanium truss rod, resulting in a wonderfully lightweight package that balances perfectly, standing or seated.  This extra-rigid neck contributes deep, wide low end and a clear, airy treble response. A wenge fingerboard, one of my favorite materials, adds snap and definition without any harshness.

This is the first bass I've built with the excellent new DCB pickups by Aguilar Amplification.  These 'dual-coil blade' pickups are a perfect blend of vintage clarity and modern full-range response, with a little bit of "MM"-style grind that really cuts beautifully.  Run passively, they have a natural mid peak and growl that is perfect for rock, funk, and uptempo styles - then, dial in the onboard OBP1 preamp and stand back.  I am VERY impressed with these pickups!  They are a perfect match for this bass.

"Official" studio pictures coming this week - in the meantime, these basses are available!

Email or call for more info....Thanks!

Woodstock show coming up!
October 20, 2013

Fall greetings from Woodstock!  It's a beautiful season, and I'm very excited

to be showing at next week's Woodstock Invitational Luthiers' Showcase!

It's a fantastic show that draws some of the best builders and players in the country,

and it's a pleasure and a privilege to be part of it.  Hope to see you there!

On a more personal note, it is with the greatest pleasure that I'd like to introduce my new daughter, Eilamay:

She arrived October 17th.

For this reason, please forgive me if I am a bit slower than usual to respond to emails and calls in the next few weeks!

Thanks, and best wishes,

A great time at the Woodstock Showcase...
October 30, 2012

This past weekend was tremendous fun at the Woodstock Invitational Luthiers' Showcase!

I showed two Auriole guitars, both of which got wonderful reactions from all the folks that stopped by the table.

(Photo: Maegan Wells...thanks Maegan!)

It was also a great chance to meet up with many other wonderful builders, who also happen to be wonderful people.  Incredible music, world-class guitars, and good folks - what more could anyone want?

Thanks to all who came by and extra-special thanks to Baker Rorick, Sharon Klein, and all those who make the Woodstock Invitational possible.  It's really a great event!

Woodstock Invitational Showcase this weekend!
October 24, 2012

This coming weekend, I'll be having the most fun I have in Woodstock all year long!

Saturday and Sunday, please come join me and 40 other boutique acoustic guitarmakers at the

Woodstock Invitational Luthiers' Showcase

This is a truly wonderful event, and is host to some of the very best acoustic makers in the business.

If that's not enough, there is also world-class music all day long, with wonderful players demonstrating the instruments that are on display.

I can't say enough about this great show - it's well worth the trip for anyone that can make it!

Come by and say hello - I'll be there with two lovely Auriole guitars.

Back from Montreal - and away from the shop...
July 16, 2012

I'm back from the Montreal Guitar Show, and had a great time!

The two show guitars came out beautifully, and I've uploaded photo galleries to the "Guitars" page.

The audience of visitors and builders at Montreal was very receptive, and the guitars were very well received.

Here's a quick video of the wonderful Kinloch Nelson demonstrating "Coco", the wenge guitar from this pair:

In other news, I will be on hiatus from my shop between 7/17 and 8/9 for some much needed Summer rest.

I'll still be available by email, although it might take a few more days than usual.

Have a great Summer!  The next update will have some pictures of the new acoustics already in progress, plus a very cool electric guitar for a good friend.
