It's been a busy Winter, and I'm really glad to see Springtime approaching!
I've got a couple of new basses that are now available - studio portraits are not done yet, but here's a first look!
These are both 5-string Elfin instruments with some special upgrades:
1: Elfin 5-string, Burl/birdseye
This bass has a stunning redwood burl top, complemented by an intensely figured birdseye maple fingerboard.
The body back is walnut, and the neck is 3-piece laminated QS maple. To complete the look, the body and neck have black pinstripe accent veneers, along with black-ringed "deco dots" for a touch of class.
Loaded with Duncan dual-coils and a Pope FlexCore preamp, this bass has a real "NYC" kind of sound - tight, clean, and defined lows with thick, fat upper register and a great, almost 'horn-like' solo fingerstyle tone. Twist a few knobs for a big, open slap tone with tons of headroom.
#2: Elfin 5-string, Quilt maple/Ocean Blue
Both visually and sonically, this Elfin 5 really reaches out and grabs you. The AAA quilted maple top is finished in a multi-stage Ocean Blue, which brings out the depth and beauty of the quilted figure. The poplar body core came from an exceptionally light and resonant board, and gives the bass a lively and quick attack with lots of definition.
The 3-pc. maple neck has internal carbon fiber reinforcements and an upgraded titanium truss rod, resulting in a wonderfully lightweight package that balances perfectly, standing or seated. This extra-rigid neck contributes deep, wide low end and a clear, airy treble response. A wenge fingerboard, one of my favorite materials, adds snap and definition without any harshness.
This is the first bass I've built with the excellent new DCB pickups by Aguilar Amplification. These 'dual-coil blade' pickups are a perfect blend of vintage clarity and modern full-range response, with a little bit of "MM"-style grind that really cuts beautifully. Run passively, they have a natural mid peak and growl that is perfect for rock, funk, and uptempo styles - then, dial in the onboard OBP1 preamp and stand back. I am VERY impressed with these pickups! They are a perfect match for this bass.
"Official" studio pictures coming this week - in the meantime, these basses are available!
I'm really excited to be showing in NYC on 9/28 for the "Lords of the Low End",
an all-bass show with a very exciting lineup, and a good cause to boot!
I'll be exhibiting 6 lovely Elfin basses, alongside some other wonderful high-end bass, amp, and accessory builders.
